About Shiatsu Massage
The word shiatsu means ‘finger pressure’ in Japanese. The practice uses comfortable pressure, touch and manipulative techniques. This balances energy flow and adjusts elements of the body’s physical structure.
The body and mind are inextricably linked. This means when we have poor posture and hold tension in our muscles, it can affect how we feel emotionally. Equally when we feel low, we tend to become more tense and lethargic physically. Bodywork such as massage, recognises this and uses supportive touch to encourage healing.
Shiatsu takes this theory one step further, working on a physical, emotional and spiritual level. Modalities that include awareness of the body’s vital energy offer a way of understanding how our experience is stored in the body.
In traditional Chinese medicine, these things are considered expressions of our qi. Our qi flows throughout the body using pathways, called meridians.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Should I Wear?
Wear Comfortable, Loose-Fitting Clothing: There are no oils used during shiatsu massage, so you will be fully clothed during the session. However, just as you should refrain from eating to remain at ease and unrestricted, you should also dress in loose, comfortable clothing during your massage. Many clients enjoy this, as it allows them to feel free and relaxed without the awkwardness of being naked.
What Will Happen?
When performing shiatsu, therapists apply deep pressure using their fingers, thumbs, and/or palms in a continuous sequence. The finger pads are used to apply pressure, and each point is typically held for two to eight seconds.
In some cases, the pressure points stimulated during shiatsu may feel tender. Those receiving shiatsu often describe this tenderness as “good pain,” but it’s important to alert your therapist if you feel discomfort or pain during your massage. Your therapist can then adjust the pressure to make the massage more comfortable for you.
Shiatsu is typically done on a low massage table or on a mat on the floor. Although the sequence is often similar to other types of massage, no massage oil is used, so it is usually done with the client fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothing.
Is massage for me?
Shiatsu works to improve overall health by affecting the internal energy system. Therapy often results in increased range of motion and improved coordination. Used as either a primary or complementary therapy, Shiatsu combines assisted-stretching techniques and acupressure to restore muscle and bone structure.
